We hope that the following information will assist you in planning a smooth and enjoyable stay. Details are provided below to assist you in making your transport, accommodation and sightseeing arrangements.

Transport

Travel from the Airport to Melbourne

Melbourne International Airport is located 20km north-west of the city centre. The city can be easily accessed by taxi or Skybus.

Taxi

A taxi from the airport to the city will cost around A$40.00.

Skybus

This bus service costs A$16.00 per adult one way and $26.00 return. The Skybus departs every 10 - 15 minutes and depending on the time of day will drop you off at your hotel or at the main terminus at Spencer Street Station. Travel from the City to the University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne is located approximately 1.5km north of the city centre. It can be accessed by foot, taxi or by tram.

Taxi

A taxi from the city to the University of Melbourne will cost around A$10.00

Tram

Trams can be taken to the University of Melbourne via Elizabeth Street or Swanston Street. For further information regarding tram services, please visit the Yarra Trams website. 

Other Transport Information

Melbourne has an extensive public transportation system consisting of buses, trains and trams. The University is particularly well serviced by trams and buses. The system works via an automated ticketing system. A ticket for use on all public transport is called a Metcard. Commuters are able to purchase Metcards on trams or from conveniently located retail outlets throughout Melbourne and suburbs that allow travel on any of the three forms of public transport available.

Metcard tickets range in price depending on the distance that needs to be travelled and whether the ticket is for all day use or within a two-hour period. Metcards are available in the form of, two hour, daily, weekly and monthly tickets. Yearly tickets can only be purchased from railway stations or the Met Shop. Metcard tickets can be conveniently purchased on campus from the Pharmacy in Union House.

The Met Shop is located at the Melbourne Town Hall at the corner of Swanston Street and Little Collins Street, Melbourne and is open from 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays. There you can purchase tickets and obtain timetables, information, brochures, maps and other travel merchandise. You may also telephone for information on 131 638 or visit the Metcard website.
