International Visitors Program

During the course of the year, the University will host several hundred short-term international visitors, that is delegations or individuals who come to University for a few hours or a day, perhaps for a week.

Visits of this nature are an important part of the international program of the University.

Many of the visits will be coordinated and hosted by the International Relations Office while others will be hosted by faculties and other administrative units. The following table provides a guide to the involvement of the University community in the international visitors program.

Responsible Unit

Level and Types of Visits

International Relations Office Heads of Diplomatic Missions; representatives of Foreign Governments; representatives of international peak bodies; delegations from universities with which the University has a formal bilateral agreement; delegations from universities seeking to establish a bilateral relationship; and general delegations/study tours seeking an overall program.

The International Relations Office acts as the liaison point for visits organised through State and Commonwealth Departments. This includes the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Education, Science and Training.

Marketing and Recruitment (Offshore) Agents, representatives of study abroad partners, and representatives of off shore partners.
Faculties Delegations and individual visitors that involve faculty based events or faculty specific relationships.
Development Office International, national, and local alumni, and former students and graduates who will be visiting the University as guests of the Alumni Relations Program or to renew their contact with their Faculty.  Other visitors may include alumni and development professionals from interstate or overseas institutions.
Other Administrative Units Visits of a specific nature that relate only to that Unit.

Staff in the International Relations Office are available to provide advice and assistance to faculties and other administrative units in developing a program for an international visitor. This might include advice about

All visits coordinated by the International Relations Office are recorded in the On-line Visit Calendar. In addition the International Relations Office prepares an annual report titled "International Visitors Program" which provides information on visits coordinated through the International Relations Office. The report is designed to inform and update the University community involved in visit management or visit participation on the activities of the International Relations Office. This report is available to University of Melbourne staff involved in hosting visitors by contacting staff responsible for International Liaison.
